Laurel Archer was born to Patricia and Thomas Archer on a surprisingly warm spring day. As she grew up, her parents loved her almost as much as Laurel herself loved music. From the day she discovered she could sing, she never again stopped. Music was always the love of her life, and she did not shy away from pursuing it. At fourteen, she was accepted into a performing arts high academy in New York City on a scholarship, and while her parents hesitated to send their only daughter to New York by herself, they couldnโt afford the move. So, at fourteen, Laurel found herself in the big apple, where her love for music continued to grow.After graduating from high school, Laurel was accepted into multiple colleges and conservatories, before finally settling on NYU with a full-ride scholarship. She was in her senior year when she discovered that she had developed nodes on her vocal chords. Coming from a fairly poor family, Laurel could not afford to get the surgery to get the nodes removed, so Laurel did what she was told not to do: she kept singing. She was able to graduate, and began pursuing a career in musical theatre. Within a couple of years, however, Laurelโs dreams came crashing down.At the age of 24, Laurel lost her ability to sing. Even with surgery, her continued singing while having nodes left her with irreversible damage that left her unable to sing anymore. Dreams crushed, Laurel ended up abandoning her performance career, instead accepting a job working behind the scenes at a concert venue.Laurelโs passion for music all but dissipated. Her voice and ability to sing had always been such a crucial part of her, but she didnโt know who she was without it. Laurel fell into a deep depression, with her friends and family growing more worried every day. She insisted she was fine, but even a complete stranger could see that she was struggling.On a trip to the Met with a friend, Laurel found herself standing in front of the head of a statue of apollo. The god of music, her friend had said, urging her to try praying to him for help--to which Laurel scoffed. โIf heโs real, then heโs abandoned me.โ Little did she know that the sun god would see those words as a challenge.
FOURTEEN YEARS LATERLife with a god was never something Laurel could have imagined, not to mention having a child with him. But that has been her reality for the last fourteen years. Raising their daughter has been mostly her job, but she doesnโt blame Apollo for that. She knows he still has duties as a god, and so she cherishes their moments together.As their daughter, Lyra, grows older, she is starting to show signs of the gift of prophecy, which worries Laurel. As her daughter begins to attract more and more attention for the mythical world, she worries whether or not she can protect her daughter properly in Apolloโs absence.
